Darcy and Ashlee's Wedding

Darcy and Ashlee's wedding was perfect. I almost died when Ashlee came out of the Temple... her dress was absolutely stunning! The weather was gorgeous, you almost couldn't tell it was December, at least until we got to the reception... It was at The Ledges Golf Club and they had it decorated all cozy with a fire burning and a Christmas tree, hot chocolate and candy canes. It was divine.

I had so much fun with this photo shoot!! Whitney and I planned for months bouncing ideas off each other, and gathering props. They actually drove down from SLC to shoot their bridals and wouldn't you know it, it rained the entire time they were down... We found a tiny break in the weather, and took our chances, but did end up getting rained out in the end. I still think they turned out so fun!

We stopped under a funky old tree and read some passages from "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle, while the sound of an Indian Flute reverberated off the canyon walls. There must have been some magic in that old flute, because we've been pretty inseparable ever since!" This year we were able to see a Picasso exhibit at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. The exhibit is on loan from The Musée National Picasso, Paris. The works on display were Picasso's own collection that he carried with him throughout his lifetime.. and there were over 150 pieces of exquisite paintings and sculptures. It was spectacular. I am more than thrilled to have been able to share this once in a lifetime experience with my family. They would not allow pictures although quite frankly pictures would not have been able to do his work justice, we spent hours in there, taking it all in.... they were truly breathtaking. Here are a few pictures outside the Museum and in Golden Gate Park and around the City. For those of you who are familiar with the street artist Banksy you will notice we had a couple sightings of his work in the city as well... ART really was my first love. I am fortunate to have parents that share in my love for art and music... My Dad loves to tell the story of the time I was 15 years old and he took me to an Andy Warhol exhibit that was held somewhere on campus at Berkeley University. He walked around the corner to find me looking up at the Marilyn Monroe painting with both hands on the painting.. I was completely consumed. He on the other hand was mortified that I would do such a thing... I can make excuses and say I was young and naive or didn't know the rules, but the truth of the matter is I was in love.

Napa Valley

Every year our family takes a trip to the Bay Area in California to visit my Dad and extended family. This year my Dad had a project planned for the kids, so Lance and I were able to sneak away for the day. It's been about 9 years since we had been to Napa Valley- although it's only about a 30 -40 minute drive from my Dad's house.. We decided on Francis Ford Coppola's Vineyard Rubicon Estate . We didn't really put a lot of thought into it we just figured winery/ Coppola.. win, win. But as we drove down the tree-lined driveway, and got closer to the estate, I couldn't help but be in awe... the grounds were beautiful, sprawling, and well-groomed. The majestic fountain centralized in the courtyard and the large, trellis shaded outdoor patio gives this place such a calm surrender, It made me feel like I was visiting an estate in Tuscany. It would be a beautiful place for a wedding. As we entered the estate, I took in the sights as well as the smells, it's hard to describe the smell, but if I were to venture a guess I would say it smelled like a castle. The ambiance was just perfect, and I loved that there was a vast collection of authentic movie memorabilia displayed, as well as his wine-making accomplishments, because YES we are fans.... and much of the memorabilia is integrated throughout the property so that you can enjoy it all while you sip your delicious wine. Honestly, I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon. I'm glad we decided to do it.

Tammy and Asa came from LA to be married on the top of a mountain in Zion National Park, The view was absolutely breathtaking, and suited their down to earth personalities perfectly. Tammy and Asa found this spot hiking on a previous trip to Zion, isn't that just so romantic... We took off-road vehicles up to the where the ceremony was to be held. Tammy was perfectly stunning as she walked down the isle barefoot... Asa never took his eyes off her. They are so adorably in love, I am so happy to have been a part of their beautiful day. Thank you so much for all your help Kellie. It was such a good time;)

I was recently asked to photograph a friend and fellow photographer's family. Kellie is an amazing photographer and as she has so many gorgeous pictures of her children, she just needed that one great family picture to place in the middle of the photo wall amongst the rest of her family's cherished memories... I think every photographer faces that same issue. We've all tried the tripods with a remote for the shutter, just to end up frustrated with the results.... I can totally understand that, BUT at the same time, can you imagine how nervous I was to photograph another photographers family. I think I was nervous every minute up until the actual shoot, that doesn't happen often but I am happy that when it does, somehow, all the stress or anxiety washes away once the clients show up, because I know that whatever anxiety I am feeling... they have that ten fold.

It is so important for photographers to stay calm and collected at all times, I think the best complement I ever got was when a friend/client called me Jasper (you know like from the Twilight books.. he has the ability to calm a room:) I remind myself of that often, and try to live up to that compliment.

I wanted to take the time to talk to clients and potential clients about the importance of creating a calm environment for your family before and during your photo session.

First of all be sure everyone gets a good night's sleep the night before your photo session, cranky kids greatly complicate the photo process, as do impatient or stressed out parents.

Make sure everyone is well fed, and ready to go in plenty of time before the shoot, trying to rush everything at the last minute is a recipe for disaster. If you are wearing sandals or heals you will want to bring comfortable shoes, because you may have to walk a bit or step through water or in this case a million slugs.....

No matter how prepared you are, things may still go wrong, for instance with this particular photo shoot... I took my good friend Christina P with me to help with the little ones (having entertainment for the kiddos is key;) we arrive early to scope out the location, then just wait in the car on this beautiful day with the windows down listening to music, AND unknowingly running down the car battery.... When Kellie's family showed up, we turned the car off and went to greet them. When it was time to get the couch out of the back, Christina pushed the button to open the back door but it didn't work, We didn't stress, just hoped that Kellie's family had jumper cables, as the battery was completely dead. luckily they did. We started setting up the shoot when Kasen, Kellie's oldest boy came over and said "Mom, we have a problem, we forgot Mac's pants" Kellie laughed, and went over to the car hoping it was not true... but it was. Yep, this is starting out perfectly.....

But Justin and Kellie didn't stress out, they both handled it perfectly and knew that we would have to make the best of it, and work with what we had.

My point is..... parents, RELAX. If you stay calm and trust your photographers (they are generally quite skilled at getting the kids to join in the fun) your family portrait will be one you are happy to hang in your home for years.

I will be accepting one female and one male from each local high school.
If accepted you will be representing Andrea Watkins Photography and telling all your friends about my senior sessions all throughout your senior year.
For every referral that results in a session, you will receive free prints! And the referred client will also get a discount on their order.
Referrals can include anyone who books the following sessions: Senior, Newborn, Family Portraits, Weddings, etc.

I think it's so heart warming when family's come from near and far to be together for the holidays. The Patel's came all the way from Massachusetts, while the Wards traveled from California to spend the holidays with their Parents here in St. George. Aren't they just the most beautiful family....

Wow I can't believe how badly I have neglected the ol' blog... It sure has been nice to spend time with my family though. Is it weird that I still have Christmas up?

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays, I have several family pictures I still need to post, so if you are one of those families, thank you for being so patient with me. I really do have the best clients ever, I truly adore each and every one of you.

What are some of your New Years resolutions? Mine are: To make time for the important things in my life. I find myself saying "I just don't have time", "I just don't have time" A LOT, and what I need to do is just be more productive with my time, so that at the end of the day I can relax with my fam. Sounds easy enough right? haha, we'll see. 2nd I need to get my computer organized-not a small task lemme tell ya, I have hundreds of folders of my own personal pictures that have not even been touched. You're not going to believe this but I haven't printed out my own pictures and put them in albums for over 2 years... YIPES!! also I want to shoot more art inspired work, art was my first love, so I tend to incorporate it into my work as much as I can, but lately I've had other things in mind.... dun dun dun.

You may have noticed the "FOR SALE" tab above... I opened an Etsy shop and started selling some of my work. Check it out, If you haven't yet. I have even sold a couple pictures already. woo-hoo!

And finally with all that said, on with the post...

My friend Jordane Hirschi is the St. George area Matilda Jane trunk keeper!!!! I know you have all been dying for a local trunk keeper, right? Ooooh I just loved their colors, and they are such an adorable family! I'm having a lot of fun in Photoshop with them:) although my posts might start getting smaller and smaller as I really need to get back to editing... this dang internet is so distracting.

Hahaha. I love this family! They always have so much fun during their shoot, and the kids always have me in stitches with their cute dances and stories. did you notice how big Cayzlie has gotten? I heart those chubby cheeks!

Halie, is a super adorable senior I photographed a while back. I loved spending the day with her and her cute mom & sis. I loved watching her interact with her horse, and ride like she has been riding her whole life. I love photographing people in their own environments, it really does seem to bring out so much more of who they really are. thank you girls for a wonderful day.

I'm sorry for just getting around to posting your pictures Halie, but I hope you love them:)
